The Growing Game...

OK, so I know today is Halloween.

I'm fairly certain your feed will be flooded with fun and interesting costumes, recipes, decor, and DIY's - all perfectly fitting the holiday theme.

I would join in, but there's only one problem... I didn't dress up this year. I don't have any cute kids in awww-worthy costumes, I didn't carve pumpkins or decorate, nor did I bake any sweet treats. I didn't even go through the trouble of dressing up my furbabies (even though I was tempted by Target)! I mean really, what kind of blogger am I?

This leaves me with some pretty limited Halloween-themed blog topics...

However, I remembered it's been almost one year since I started growing my hair out... maybe you have noticed? Last Halloween I went as a cat (so original, I know) and I had an A-line cut that had been dyed a brassy brown tone and the back was about a millimeter long...

The problem with an A-line is it's so short in the back that in order to grow it out you have to go through several heart breaking cuts (and an atrocious mullet phase) to keep evening it out, thus making the growing process that much longer and frustrating!

Flash forward to December - February... still not a real significant change.

May - July I remember finally seeing some progress...

August - September I was getting excited because it started resting on my shoulders!

Which brings us to today... probably another 6 inches until it reaches boob level :)

I know it's no where near my goal of Zooey Deschanel's length, but I like to think it's only a few more months way... OK, maybe eight... or seventeen.

I did change a lot of my hair habits over the months, reducing the amount of washes per week down to two, using repairing products since my ends are fried, and lessening the amount of heat I used during styling. I have not, however, done the most recommended task and gotten regular trims. Like, at all, for about six months now... mostly because I'm scared of losing any length at this point! That would scare me more than Paranormal Activity 4... (which was pretty good by the way!).

Have you recently played the growing game?
I'm curious - how long did it take before you could rock the top knot? :)

  1. Your hair looks great. Looking at the pictures it looks like it grew really quickly too.

My hair is long (a few inches past the middle of my back) and I really like it that way but it has been years since I have had it cut, so to get rid of all the split ends I may be going to shoulder length soon. Hopefully if I don't like the short length it will grow back as quickly as yours has. :-)

  2. I'm currently growing my hair back out from thinking a pixie was a good idea at the start of the year. It is currently at your may-july stage; hardly shoulder length. So I painstakingly wait just like you to rock those long locks again.. girl, i feel your pain!:) someday soon, last year I did the same thing and then chopped it off- it took a year to fully grow out, good luck!

  3. I had my hairin-between a bob cut or shoulder length for ages. Plus I had highlights. It took ne forever to grow these out even though I am lucky that my hair is growing rather fast. I never wanted to go get my hair cut because it was finally getting longer but I had to because of the stupid highlights. So it probably took me three years I'd say.
Oh and about the top knot. Ever since I can wear my hair in a top knot, I do so about 90% of the time. =)

  4. I've been growing my hair out for years. I want it to reach my waist and then I'm chopping most of it off for Locks of Love. That's assuming it reaches my waist sometime before I turn 37. (I'm almost 22.) It's been so long growing that I haven't been getting trims either because I don't want to sacrifice any length! I've got about five, six inches to go before my hair reaches my waist.

A blog friend of mine, Stephanie, blogged about a hair product she uses to help it grow. I haven't tried it myself but I might look into it! It's called Doo Gro and she blogged about it here.

  5. I am in the middle of playing the growing game... I started about 4 years ago and it was around your August-September and today... And it is now around the middle of my back (my hair grows slow!) I'm wanting it to reach my waist and I will most likely never cut it shorter than it is right now (I'm loving my long hair!)
I should really stop using a straightner and such on it but my hair is crazy so it's gotta be tamed somehow!

  7. We're supposed to be rocking top knots by Christmas..hahaha remember that?!

I feel your pain on growing out the a-line cut..waaah it's horrible.

I started going in for regular trims, but I still wash my hair like 4 times a week...oops. It just gets so greasy if I don't!

Yours seems to be growing a heck of a lot faster than mine sooo I'll just be over here living through you ;)

  8. oh man... i've been playing this game for FOUR years now.

so sad, really, when you think about it. haha

BUT i NEVER style my hair/add heat. I literally can't remember the last time blow dried my hair.

  10. Love your hair! In February I got annoyed with my hair and chopped it all off super short like a long, shaggy pixie cut. And now I'm just done with having short hair, go figure. I have a feeling it's going to be about another year before I can get it to the length that yours is now which is the length I want again. Blah.

Also jealous that you're able to only wash your hair twice a week. I have very thin hair and I'm lucky if I can manage to go every other day without washing...

  11. I love it! love love love. so proud of you! mine was about that long when i could do the sock bun. think of it... yours is a little longer than mine when i started BBB! in just a year, think where you could be!

  12. I'm running the long distance in hair growing right now. Last time I had a "proper" hair cut was into a short bob, just below my ears... it's now well on it's way down my back, all in aid of the "but I HAVE to have long hair for my wedding!!" mantra. Yours looks gorgeous all grown out =) x

  13. I feel your pain. This past summer I cut off about 6-8 inches of relaxed ends to go natural. I'm at collar bone length now. My goal is to get back to armpit length.

  14. oy! I can relate. I got an extreme angled bob when Raine was born. Just hacked that shiz right off and it took me a year and a half to grow our.... then I recently hacked it off again into a layered bob ;) I'm so indecisive! But at least the layered bob is easier to grow out!

  15. I'm having the same Halloween day you are having -.-

Btw if I play the growing game with my hair, for the last 4 years I have the same length!!!!! It doesn't grow anymore!! I cut my ends but that's it!!! and I hate it :(

  16. I've always had really long hair but every other summer I chop about 10 inches off to donate to Locks of Love, leaving me with an above-shoulder bob. I've done this twice now and it always seems to grow back pretty quickly!

Here's a tip for ya...Although, you may think a trim will kill you, it's SO important to continue those regular trims. Even if it's half an inch, it cleans up the ends and allows your healthy hairs to keep growing rather than ending in split ends!

  17. Love the length you have now - it looks great on you. And you should be able to rock the sock bun as long as you Bobby pin a few pieces in the back. Just play around with it and see. I had the same angled cut around the time my kiddo was born and kept it short until he was almost two when I started growing it out. He is four now and It is mid back after about a three inch trim last month. Make sure you are getting plenty of protein and try taking prenatal vitamins. Also keep any heat styling and blow drying to an absolute minimum. Good luck. :)

  18. I really really love your kitty costume hair. Although you probably don't want to hear that since you're growing it out LOL. And ps you are the queen of teasing, you have mastered it. I can't tease worth crap

  19. I'm loving how gorgeous your hair is all grown out! I'm currently contemplating a major cut, my hair is almost to my butt :X It's getting pretty ridiculous.

  21. Your hair looks great at every length! Honestly, not a lot of people can pull that off. My hair is really curly so I alway keep it long but I should probably start trimming it as well. Like you, I am afraid to lose any length!

  22. SO gorgeous at every length!! I wish I could rock an A-line, would make life easier for this Momma. For now sticking to my long ass hair, which I'm loving lately! #bonus

  23. I love your hair...short, long, straight, curly...it just looks awesome!!so voluminous and nice! and i love your bangs, i can never make mine stay like that!

I've been growing out my hair for 2 years know. when i started i had my hair like you right now. now, when i pull my hair back is a few inches away from my waist. things that have helped me? washing my hair less, less heat styling 8at first i didnt followed this), embracing my natural hair, deep masks and over night treatments, eating healthy and taking vitamins specific for hair health and grom. and trimming, even if you are scared. I know they say your hair doesnt grow faster if you but it, but mine does. i cut it every 2 months at the most but very very little and i cut it with the moon in its growing phase. this sounds ridiculous too, it might all be placebo effect, but it works for me too...

good luck with growing your hair out!!

I've always loved your hair! It's so pretty

  25. You're getting closer!

I know this game too well. My first haircut was at 12. My hair is uber curly so if I straighten it and cut off 2" it's almost 4.5 when it's back to curly. If I straighten now my hair is too the middle of my back, curly it's just at my shoulders. I miss having long hair.

  26. I was just going to say, I think your hair is amazing! Love the side bangs and the color. And I don't really enjoy Halloween either...but my kiddos LOVE it and we have to go:) I was bad mommy, though...no pumpkin carving and I don't dress up!
