Top 10 Favorite TV Series

Most people have hobbies, ya know... sewing, crafting, collecting, etc. Me? I've accepted the fact that one of my greatest hobbies is watching TV series.

Yes, I actually consider watching TV a hobby. I've been told that when I was a little toddler I would sit in front of the TV for hours - easily entertained, I suppose - but I think it has to do with my imagination. I like to get lost in other people's worlds.

A couple years ago I only had a handful of limited favorites that I took the time to DVR, mostly reality trash and singing/dancing competitions. Since canceling our cable and switching to online streaming, I've had to be more intentional with my choices, and consequently have sought out the best rated shows. Let's just say it's brought my addiction to a whole other level...

So today I thought I would count down my top 10 favorite TV series, and you should know this might have been the hardest thing I've ever have to do...

10 >> New Girl

It took me a while to hop on the New Girl train, but I'm so glad I did! I'm a big Zooey fan, and she is more lovely, witty, and sarcastic than ever. While the humor is surely its best asset, I adore the romantic tension between Jess and Nick, and Schmidt is my absolute favorite. It's brought me and Josh to hysteric belly laughs on more than one occasion - that's always a good sign a new show is a keeper!

09 >> Boardwalk Empire

Oh, Boardwalk. You are so good. I love the 1920's setting, the Prohibition scandals, the intense drama, and bits of clever humor. I would have rated you higher if you didn't take away my favorite character so soon! (I seem to always latch on to one of the main characters - like there is some imaginary relationship going on there - I know it's weird, but it keeps me committed.)

08 >> The Walking Dead

I love me some Walking Dead, thanks to ZOMBIES - the obsession of our generation (well, that and mustaches). This show has made me shriek, jump, and cry with heartache, and I can't help but get caught up in the thought of something like this really happening. It would be one of my worst nightmares - having to strip myself of my luxuries, live in the same greasy clothes every day, smell like zombie slobber, and never wear makeup again. Oh, the horror!

07 >> Downton Abbey

This has been my most recent love - I started it on Christmas and I'm already caught up through two whole seasons. I'm quick like that. I find the whole story fascinating - it's got history, romance, drama - and the wardrobe? To die. I think I just love shows set in different time periods - since I never paid much attention in history class, these shows have been filling in a lot of gaps... tehe :)

06 >> True Blood

Um, hi. If you don't already watch this, you need to. I'm not big of fantasy or vampires (I despise the Twilight movies) but when it's mixed in with sexy vampires, fairies, and werewolves all in semi-pornographic scenes - I just can't help myself. I know it's been around for a while, but I got into it pretty late, then promptly congratulated myself for discovering it. No matter how it ends, Eric will always be my favorite vamp :)

05 >> GIRLS

This has been my even more recent love... meaning I might have watched the entire first season in less than 24 hours :/ But before you judge me, you must see it. It's that good. So honest, so crude, so hilarious - so perfect. Some might think it's a little risque, but I completely respect it - the more crude the better, in my opinion!

04 >> SHAMELESS

This cast is amazing. The plot is funny, tragic, and sweet all at the same time. William H. Macy plays a great drunk and Emmy Rossum is perfection. It brings up sensitive issues that most people can relate with, but keeps things in a humorous light. Josh and I really fell in love with this one super quick. I can't wait for the new season to air on the 13th!

03 >> DEXTER

I never thought I'd have sympathy for a serial killer until I got hooked on this show. Michael C. Hall A) is a freaking hottie and B) is so perfect for the role. Each season brings a new level of suspense - I'm always excited to see if he'll get caught, and if he'll ever live a normal life. Love ya, Dex.

02 >> GAME OF THRONES

Freaking Game of Thrones. Had me bawling like a baby after only the second episode. It's harsh, raw, and heartbreaking, but the drama remains unmatched, in my opinion. It's completely unpredictable - no one character is safe from being killed off the show, so you're always on the edge of your seat as the story unravels. This is my most anticipated season return!

01 >> MAD MEN

Three words: Don mother-effin Draper. He has stole my TV heart. I don't even care where the story goes as long as I can watch him sit at his desk smoking, drinking, and shouting demands. Besides Don, I'm totally obsessed with the 60's time period - the clothing, the politics, the culture. But perhaps what I love most are the subtle underlying messages in each episode, artfully thought-provoking, and always done in such good taste. It's got to be the most creative show out there, hands down.

EDIT: After posting this today, I realized I forgot one of my all time favorites... Breaking Bad!!! I cannot believe I forgot it... but that's what I get for watching so many series. For the record, if I were to redo this list I would have it share Dexter's place.

* * *

OK, I know what you're thinking, "What else does this girl do besides watch TV?" and I completely understand your judgement. What can I say - I'm a junkie and I know it. Are there meetings for this kind of thing?

What are some of your favorite TV series?

  1. Okay. Now you inspired me to do a similar post like this. Crap. But it's not 10 for me. It's more like... 3, 4 or maybe 5.... HA!

    10. I just couldn't get into New Girl. I love Zooey don't get me wrong, but for some odd reason... this one didn't make my heart pitter patter. And plus, my so called BFF who is a PORN STAR said that Jess was EXACTLY HER! ummmm..... I don't see Jess laying on her back or givin hand jobs for $$$.

    9. Love Steve Buscemi. The cast on Boardwalk looks pretty interesting! I have seen them all in movies! I think I might jump on this bandwagon!

    8. Oh girl. You know me and TWD. No need for a comment on that one ;)

    7. Nah. Not my style. LOL

    6. I could NOT get into TB either! WTF!!

    5. I have heard about Girls. I am told that I need to watch it. Oh I will ;)

    4. Never heard of Shameless

    3. I don't have Showtime to watch Dexter!!!!!!! BOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!

    2. I never seen GOT... it just started right? Cause it's on HBO...

    1. Mad Men looks very interesting. I have seen many previews for this and it looks..... GREAT! When does it come on?

  4. oh woah you just open a new whole world to me!!!because i dont watch any of those shows. I'm such a tv shows junkie too. i've tried true blood and the game of thrones but i got bored at the 2nd season. dont like them at all. recently i started watching "weed" (its kind of old) but i find it funny. Obviously I watch all the young adults/teens shows like: pretty little liars (this one is amazing, try to watch it!), gossip girl, the secret life of the american teenager, the vampire diaries (this one is great too, for being vampires and all that), the secret circle (love this one, its so dark!), the mentalist (good one!), greys anatomy, the big band theory (hilarious), how i met your mother, switched at birth, bunheads (these last 2 are really nice to watch and different from your tipical fantastic/magical or teens show. they are also funny)...oh and once upon a time its amazing too. first episode is kind of lame, then it gets amazing all through 1st season. snd season has up and downs but its also great!

hope i gave you some ideas!

    Bea =)

But The New Girl, Dexter, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones = love!

  7. Great list! I can't with TB. The acting in season 1 just ruined it for me and AP's terrible southern drawl. UGH! I have yet to watch GOT or MM or BE, or... ok. Let's be real, all I watch on this list are New Girl, Walking Dead and DEXTER! (love the pic of him you chose!) BE was on my to-watch list but I hate HBO.

My other must watch shows: The League, huh.. I though I had more. =]

  8. THE WALKING DEAD!!
`nuff said! I can´t get enough of it - the mid-season break sucks big time though.

i planned to come up with a similar post as well - stay tuned!

I'd love to watch Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire...and I've never heard of Girls but I'm intrigued!

    Good list :)

  16. I'm a tv junkie too and I love this post!! I just got into Downton Abbey myself and watched the whole series to date in about a week too! I also love Shameless, Mad Men, Dexter and need to get into Game of Thrones! In March there's a television festival in LA and I go to as many panels for shows I like as I can! I wish you lived near LA and I'd say you should go too!!

  17. Oh New Girl is soooo funny! My boyfriend and I love it! And my parents and I are obsessed with The Walking Dead. We were late to the phenomenon, but watched the first two seasons, in about 3 days total, maybe less...

    ReplyDelete
  18. You just named almost all of my favorite TV shows! My husband and I are currently catching up on The Walking Dead. We just finished episode 1 of season 3 and man I'm so hooked. I dreamt about zombies last night.

True Blood (although the obsession is waning), Game of Thrones, Dexter, New Girl, & my all time Shameless are also on my list. Sadly, I'm still hooked on some CW nonsense like Glee and Gossip Girl (RIP).

Have you tried Sons of Anarchy? We got through those seasons pretty quick and I LOVE me some Jax Teller.

  19. New Girl & Dexter are two of mine & my husbands favorite shows {though we have yet to see the last TWO seasons of Dexter because we didn't have Showtime...} I love True Blood & have seen most of it but am still working on catching up. Now The Walking Dead is one of the shows I really want to start watching, everyone I know watches it pretty much & they tell me it's amazing.

My newest show obsession is by far Revolution... it's getting total mixed reviews from people but I cannot get enough of it! I also am in love with 2 Broke Girls! Seriously Kat Dennings is hilarious as Max and it's one of the dirtiest {yet hilarious at the same time} shows on regular TV!! There has not been one episode where I haven't busted up laughing and it just keeps getting funnier! We are also big cop/csi drama watchers in this house {my husband is a cop} so Blue Bloods & Southland are our favorites for sure! Everything about them both are so realistic & true!

  20. I loved reading about all of your choices! One of my 2013 goals is to find more fun TV shows my husband and I can watch together.

Right now, we are obsessed with the Walking Dead. I want to jump on the New Girl and Downton Abbey train. I've been meaning to for some time.

    Thanks for sharing :)

    + Downton Abbey
    + Mad Men
    + Greys
    + Pretty Little Liars
    + Revenge

Oh and Dawson's Creek or One Tree HIll even though they are over!

  22. Ugh I'm a TV show junkie. Love Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, Portlandia and Grey's Anatomy. If you like New Girl I suggest checking out the Mindy Project. It's hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with you on Walking Dead. That is one of my absolute favorites. One of my new obsessions is Revenge. I watched the first two seasons in a matter of days. Lets see I also love White Collar, Sons of Anarchy, and Warehouse 13. I would love to see a lot of the ones you mentioned but I can't afford the time to be hooked on any more lol.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We are giving up cable today, and my plan is that we will do a lot of catching up on series' now that our tv is going to be severly limited. Thank you for ranking your top picks!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm kind of obsessed with shows. It's a little out of hand to tell you the truth. I love every show on this list or it's on my list of things to watch! I have a weak spot for practically every show on the cw. I would be scared to make a list of my favorite shows for fear of how many there would actually be! :)

  27. T.V. is my absolute favorite! Seriously! And like you I use to love all the reality stuff but no longer have cable. I have never even heard of Girls (must look into it ASAP) and I don't know what I was thinking, but I thought Boradwalk Empire was a billboard for a Video Game...sorry. I'm in love with CW shows But also love True Blood. My husband got me all into walking dead for the fisrt 3 episodes or so and then for some reason continued without me :( Did you ever watch the Tudors?! So good!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm also a TV junkie and love half of these shows (the other half are on my "to watch" list). I'd put Vampire Diaries on my list (I thought it would be just a guilty pleasure, but it's a really good, solid show) and Homeland. But one of my top shows of all time is Veronica Mars - it only had 3 seasons, but it is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Among the shows you mentioned,I have watched Mad Men,Dexter and New Girl. While Dexter had me brooding even after the episode(it's one of the most intelligent and thought-provoking TV series I've ever watched),Mad Men is freakin' hot. And New Girl is my daily dose of cookies. I can watch it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Out of your list, I only watch New Girl. I've been wanting to watch a bunch of others though, but I'm already watching a lot of shows! So many tv shows, so little time!

    ReplyDelete
  31. "Yes, I actually consider watching TV a hobby. I've been told that when I was a little toddler I would sit in front of the TV for hours - easily entertained, I suppose - but I think it has to do with my imagination. I like to get lost in other people's worlds. "

Good! It's not just me!!! Lol. I have often wondered if this was an INFP quirk, and now maybe I think it is. I just love loosing myself in other people's worlds… that's an excellent way to put it. TV shows - especially dramas - are an excellent way to do that too. Like reading a really great book, only getting to see everyone's facial expressions and tones of voice.

  32. Oh, and of your list… I watch and love… The Walking Dead, True Blood, Girls, Shameless, and I tried to watch Game of Thrones but couldn't get past the constant decaptiations (the acting and storyline was amazing though and drew me in right away). My other absolute faves these days are Parenthood, Grey's Anatomy, and Survivor. Oh and Teen Wolf over on MTV is surprisingly good too.

  33. We are going to have so much to talk about this year. GoT, TrueBlood, Walking Dead, and Girls are my fav.

I'm wondering how this Billith thing is going to ride out.

And this Walking Dead mid-season break is killing me. I cried too when Lori and T-Dog died.

BTW... I call dibs on Daryl Dixon :)

  34. I'm so bad, I am so lazy that I rarely watch any series unless it is a) a reality show on TLC, b) reruns in a marathon, or c) something ridiculous that my husband has on that I get sucked into (Jungle Gold, anyone?) I DID just order up Girls from Netflix, I'm excited for some crude, funny as hell humor. My fave.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Girl, you and I had even more in common than I ever thought.

10 - new Girl is one of my favorite comediesm, along with Big Bang Theory. I must admit though I'm not a big Zooey fan...I'm in it more for Schmidt's humour. He's by far the best character on the show.

06 - AHHHHH! You have no idea how happy I am to hear that you're a True Blood fan! My roommate and I have been catching up on all the episodes throughout the past few semesters. Such a great show and wow...Eric is my favorite too! Those abs just get me every. dang. time.

01 -- I've heard good things about Mad Men but haven't have time to watch them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh Gosh. Okay, I love Game of Thrones and True Blood. I really want to get into Boardwalk Empire but the few times I tried, I think I was mad that it took the place of True Blood on HBO and didn't give it a real chance lol.

My all time faves are Buffy and Gilmore Girls. But there's also Weeds and Big Bang Theory. OH and Sons of Anarchy is to DIE for.

I'm also loving The Vampire Diaries right now which I'm surprised about. I was worried it would be too much like Twilight, which I just don't like but it's not at all! Definitely reminds me of Buffy in some ways and True Blood in others.

  37. Oh and now I sooo might need to write a post inspired by this.

  45. I love New Girl and Downton abbey. I don't have HBO so I haven't been able to see the other shows although I've heard really good things about them.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I wish we lived closer so we could have TV Series marathon dates. I also watched the first season of Girls in less than 24 hours. I also watched freaks and geeks in less than 48 hours. I have a problem - but maybe it's just a hobby!! At the moment - I am watching Pretty Little Liars. One season nearly down 72 hours later.

p.s. Breaking Bad is AMAZING! I can't wait until summer 2013

    ReplyDelete
  47. LOL!! Whatta hobby! I'm more into Burn Notice, Alias, that kind of thing...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm totally a tv series nut too! I'm obsessed with True Blood. I bet you would really like Weeds too, from your other choices! Something that's kind of out there that you might also like is Battlestar Galactica. I know it has a really nerdy reputation but I fell in love with it from the first episode! (Fun fact: it's 3 hours long because it was supposed to only be a miniseries!)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dexter and Friends are my all time favourites, although there are many other tv shows that I love and watch religiously.. Criminal Minds, Modern Family and Castle to name a few. :)

    xx

    ReplyDelete
  50. The Mentalist. I guess I am a little biased since I am completely in love with Simon Baker. However, besides that the whole story plot is pretty darn good.
